Talking about money when one partner retires first
When one partner leaves work and the other continues, the household suddenly runs on a different rhythm. Daytime availability changes. So does who pays for what, and who feels entitled to spend.
Three topics that usually need air
Cash flow. Which accounts will cover joint bills while only one salary remains? Will the retired partner draw a pension immediately, or wait?
Time and labour. Shopping, care for relatives, and home maintenance often shift toward the person at home. Naming that shift reduces quiet resentment.
Social life. The working partner may still have office friendships; the retired partner may feel adrift by midweek. Plan one shared and one separate activity in the first months.
A lighter structure
Set a single evening, put phones away, and write decisions on one sheet: start date, interim budget, and who contacts which pension scheme. If the conversation stalls, our couples workshop gives the same agenda with a facilitator in the room.
